The nature and reserves of Bulgaria

More than one quarter of Bulgarian territory covered by forests, which are predominantly oak, beech, hornbeam, ash, Basswood, Hickory trees, they predominate in Stara Planina, Central Strandja and Mount. Coniferous forests predominate at elevations over 1000 m. Bulgarian fauna not less interesting, almost 13000 species of animal that is approximately 14 per cent of all European varieties. In Bulgaria, mostly in the mountainous part, bears, wolves, deer, chamois, noble Badgers and jackals, disappeared in other parts of Europe, can find their homes. Found almost 50 species of amphibians and reptiles, more than 1100 different species of butterflies. Of the rare bird species in Bulgaria are the bearded vultures, eagles and pelicans. There are over 3200 species of different plants.

Bulgarian mountain

Lakes of Bulgaria

Glacial lakes are the most numerous in Bulgaria. About 280 of them situated high in the mountains. Most are located at an altitude of 2200 -2400 metres, the most highly placed Lake-Rilah, Ledenika, it is located at an altitude of 2715 m.

Sea in Bulgaria

National parks in Bulgaria

 The total area of protected national parks and reserves is 498 thsd. hectares. Most of them are open for visiting.

Some parks have special reserves, for which you need to request permission in advance.

Pirinejskij National Park

Pirinejskij National Park is located on the highest part of the Pirinejskoj mountain range, the peak of which rises to 2914 m, due to the influence of the Mediterranean climate and its beautiful landscape is replete with rich vegetation and fauna. Park listed on the World Heritage list.

Rila National Park is one of the youngest Bulgarian national parks, covers nearly half of the mountain range Rila. Rila National Park is located in southwestern Bulgaria and is known for the seven Rila Lakes, a haven for travelers. Its landscape is breathtaking; here the visitor can find appeasement in sound of water flowing on the rocks of mountain streams and rivers. Bear, wild boar, red deer and several species of Eagle-these are just some of the animals that live here and the increasing romanticism, while fauna-the admiration and for amateur and professional.

Vitosha National Park

 Although it is only half an hour from Sofia, Vitosha National Park is the home of many species of butterflies, birds and mammals. Opened in 1934, he covered the whole of Vitosha, once covered by the "Great Bulgarian Forest". In addition to the Park also provide a safe haven for wolves, bears and even wild cats, as well as less dangerous animals like Badgers and deer.

National Park "Golden Sands" originally was opened in 1943, and later significantly expanded in 1981. Still, it remains one of the oldest and smallest of the national parks in Bulgaria. It is located north of the city of Varna. The Park is located at an altitude of 277 metres above sea level, and its flora strongly differs from other national parks in the country.

Visitors of the Park have a wonderful opportunity to see deer, wild boars, hares, red squirrels, eagles, falcons, pheasants. Special attention should be given to an archaeological and historical landmark Park-Aladzha monastery, which miraculously preserved wall paintings.

Near the National Park "Strandja" nature reserve "Ropotamo" is located. It stretches on both banks of the River Ropotamo and comes up to the Black Sea dunes. In no other area of Bulgaria you will not find such a diverse, rich landscape here and the island, and cliffs, and sandy beaches and bays and dunes, and marshland Arkutino, and forests and grasslands are located along the last few kilometres of the River, before flowing into the sea. The mild climate here is favorable for the huge variety of plants, heavy growth. Here the wonderful feel a variety of raptors and other wildlife.

Swamp Arkutino is a bird sanctuary, here are lots of birds and nests are rare species of cacti.

Natural reserve of Kamchia is located to the South of Varna Lake on the River Kamchia. It is possible to make boating excursion on the River, in quiet waters which are inhabited by carp and Pike, and on the banks and channels, in lush Bush and branches of those who kneel down to water trees nesting ducks, pelicans and herons.

Cape Kaliakra is located north of Balchik and known for its beauty. Golden-red rocks (their height reaches 70 m) are steeply into the sea. From here you can see the ruins of fortifications built in the fourth century BC and expanded in later ancient Romans and Byzantines.
